Daily Dining News: Hello Starbucks at 12th & L, RIP Celestin's

There's a little happy and sad news today. First, the good news.

While those around the Capitol have a number of good coffee choices like Chicory, Ambrosia or Espresso Bar, sometimes you just need Starbucks. For me, that's usually when they have their annual Frappucino happy hour late in the summer or have another sort of deal.

Well, the wait is over. Sacramento's newest Starbucks location at the corner of 12th & L is opening on Saturday, Sept. 10.

And now the bad news.

In sad news, Celestin's is closing at the end of this month. I first found out via this thread on the Yelp forums. I called and confirmed, but they did not give a reason for closing.

Sac Bee food critic Blair Anthony Robertson gave them a mostly positive review in June:

Celestin's has been serving comfort food since long before mac 'n' cheese went from that stuff you made from a box with the packet of atomic-orange dust to the "gourmet" cliché found on practically every menu in town.

And this place gets it right often enough to warrant a solid recommendation as a casual eatery with food that comes from old-fashioned values with a twist of the funky and exotic.

According to its Web site, Celestin's first opened in 1983 at a location on J street. In 2001, it moved to its current location on K street, and five years later, a second generation of the family took over operation of the restaurant.

When Celestin's closes at the end of the month, it will join a growing list of Sacramento restaurants that have closed lately - Good Eats, Spin Burger Bar, L Wine Lounge, CPK, Brew It Up and Pause Lounge in Roseville.

Hopefully, this is just a thinning of the crowd to make way for more new and innovative chefs to come onto the scene.

I like Celestin's. There are not alot of different or interesting resturants in Sacramento. Too bad it is closing.
