Sacramento's dining scene may tempt you with the latest restaurant embracing the slow food or farm to table movement, but that doesn't mean there aren't times when you want meat and potatoes. Sac Mag's Kira O'Donnell tracks down some of the best places in town to get some of each in the latest issue.
Braised Berkshire Pork Cakes—Mulvaney’s Building & Loan
Meat lovers will delight in Mulvaney’s dense, tasty pork cakes. Resembling crab cakes in both shape and texture, the delectable, crusty discs pack some seriously porky flavor. (If you love carnitas, this is the appetizer for you.) Served with a sprightly tuft of mixed greens from local Del Rio Botanical farm and a bracing grain-mustard aïoli, Mulvaney’s pork cakes are a captivating treat.

Muntean's soups' one year anniversary - This month is the one-year anniversary of the opening of the restaurant Muntean’s Soups, Salads, and Sandwiches at 1225 J St. George Muntean owns the restaurant with his wife, and while soup is the specialty, Muntean is no soup nazi. Entering the restaurant, a customer is likely to be surprised by a barrage of soup samples offered as he or she contemplates what to buy. Erik Jourgensen in Sac Press.
Local cupcake chain Icing On The Cupcake to sell its frosting - A small-but-growing Sacramento area cupcake shop chain is now also selling its frosting without the cake. Icing On The Cupcake, with four stores in Folsom, Rocklin and Sacramento, announced it will sell frosting in 1 lb. containers for $5. The frosting comes in four flavors: chocolate fudge, vanilla buttercream, cream cheese and strawberry buttercream. Bill Lindelof in the Sac Bee.
Folsom's new Whole Foods Market hosts pre-opening party - Shoppers can get a taste Saturday of what's to come during a pre-opening party hosted by Whole Foods Market at its new Folsom store, located at 270 Palladio Parkway in the Palladio shopping center. Called "Folsom Street Market," the event will be held in the new store's parking lot from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Debbie Arrington in the Sac Bee.
Total Wine & More opening Thursday on Arden Way - The Sacramento area's second Total Wine & More will open Thursday at 2121 Arden Way, featuring more than 8,000 bottles of wine, plus spirits and beer. 78 Total Wine & More stores operate around the country, with a Roseville location opening in 2008. Family Fun at Benihana - On a recent Sunday night, I had two bored, bickering kids on my hands and needed an entertaining diversion. Spontaneously, I made reservations at Benihana in Citrus Heights - a lengthy dining experience I vaguely remembered as being loud, flamboyant and distracting.
