Instant Reaction: Doritos Locos Tacos
March 07, 2012
Everybody loves Doritos. Everybody loves Taco Bell (especially after a few drinks). Why not combine the two together?
Taco Bell has done just that, with their new Doritos Locos Tacos.
Essentially, it’s a regular Taco Bell taco, but the regular taco shell has been replaced by one that tastes like Doritos.
Taco Bell test marketed the concept in the Central Valley first, and I was able to grab one during one of my many trips down I-5.
At the onset, you’re presented with the choice of the Doritos Locos Taco Supreme for $1.69, or the regular Doritos Locos Taco for $1.29. We went all out and ordered the supreme version.
I like (but don’t love) Doritos, and I eagerly awaited my order to arrive. When you first get it, the first thing that hits you is the great aroma of Doritos. As I bit into the taco, I noticed that the crunch of the Doritos taco shell wasn’t as satisfying as the regular tacos, and as I finished my first bite, there was the Doritos cheese aftertaste.
This may seem like a copout, but it predictably tasted like a Doritos chip dipped in 7 layer dip in taco form. I’m glad I tried it, but I won’t be making special trips to Taco Bell to eat it again.
While I was there, I also tried another one of their new menu items, the Beefy Crunch Burrito with Flamin’ Hot Fritos. At just 99 cents, this selection, served with ground beef, melted cheese, rice, sour cream and Fritos, was a real hit. The Fritos added a great crunch in the middle of the burrito. Just make sure you eat it quickly before the Fritos get soggy.
Overall, the two items were successful gimmicks. I preferred the Beefy Crunch Burrito with Flamin’ Hot Fritos over the Doritos Locos Tacos, but the other three people in my group preferred the Doritos Locos Tacos.
I guess they’re bigger fans of Doritos than I am.
Taco Bell will start offering the Doritos Locos Tacos starting on Thursday, March 8.
