Dining News: Volkswaffle Food Truck Adds Brick & Mortar Location

Volkswaffle

Volkswaffle, my favorite dessert food truck, is adding a brick and mortar location, reports Janelle Bitker in Sac News & Review.

The location (4140 Manzanita Avenue) once housed City Brew, a tiny coffee kiosk in a Carmichael strip mall. Now that kiosk’s been painted bright red, and with brass accents it’ll soon resemble an adorable gift box. Jeske plans to be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., with drive-through and walk-up options for ordering, but no seating on-site.

VolksWaffle specializes in Liége waffles, one of two Belgian styles and by far the superior one. They’re made from yeasted dough—not liquidy batter—with Belgian pearl sugar that creates caramelized crispiness on the outside as well as sweet, crunchy pockets on the inside. It’s a dense, richly textured delight that you will dare not compare to a doughnut, funnel cake or any breakfast plate from your standard diner. And definitely don’t try putting maple syrup on it, either.

The restaurant is expected to open in mid to late January.

The owners of Volkswaffle have been teasing the news since at least mid-October.

We are gearing to up to open up the brick and mortar and should be open in about 3 weeks. Will keep you posted and informed.

I was hoping they'd take over the spot vacated by Doughbot or somewhere closer to downtown. I guess I'll have to keep waiting.

Counter Culture: Year’s best casual-dining restaurants around Sacramento - Before we turn our attention toward adventures in casual dining in 2015, let’s stick a fork into this list of the 10 places my lunch pals and I enjoyed the most in 2014. But first: This column’s agenda is to find diverse, mostly family-run restaurants that offer recommendable dishes at fair prices, and bring them to your attention. It dwells on lunchtime fare, sometimes covering breakfast and brunch. Most of our destinations are local, but because Sacramentans love day-tripping, we also hit the road. Featuring Midtown's Cafe Plan B, Rocklin's Chef Table, Midtown's Tres Hermanas, East Sac's Fahrenheit 250, Placerville's Farm Table and more. Allen Pierleoni in the Sac Bee.
