Dining News: RIP Tidbit?

Tidbit Catering & Gelateria has been on hiatus since Labor Day, with no sign of reopening.

A sign on their restaurant said the store would be closed for a "short period," but the closure has spanned 3 months. That same sign has been in their restaurant window since at least Oct. 24, the first time I saw it.

An e-mail and call to the restaurant by Cowtown Eats was not returned. (Disclosure: I lived in the same college dorm as a family member of the owners.)

Back in April, the Garrett McCord said that Tidbit was "the ice cream place you wanted."

Gelato (milk based) and sorbet (fruit based) are both available in astounding off-the-cuff flavors that mostly draw inspiration from Asian cuisines. A vanilla-and-adzuki-bean gelato tastes sweet and earthy, with a flavor reminiscent to Chinese moon cakes. A nutty soy-based black-sesame-seed gelato is as rustic and charming as your favorite Instagram filter. In addition, I found myself drawn to both the pistachio and oatmeal flavors, the latter reminiscent of the Mother’s Cookies Iced Oatmeal cookies that your gran bought you, assuming you had a happy childhood...

What boggles my mind is why people aren’t lining up every single day for their gelato and sorbet.

Sacramento, I’ve heard you whine for a decent ice-cream store equivalent to San Francisco’s Bi-Rite Creamery—the kind of place that makes unique flavors on the premises at affordable prices.

So, here it is. Tidbit. The ice-cream place you wanted. Why aren’t you here forming lines around the block?

Unfortunately, Tidbit, with its well-loved gelateo and sorbet, was located around the corner from Devine Gelateria, which itself had lines out the doors. I hope they do as the sign promises and returns as a "better, more vibrant Tidbit," but for now, there's no indication that they will.

Tidbit Catering and Gelateria was located at 1907 Capitol Ave.

Lola’s Lounge: Vintage, modern and delicious - Chef Charlie Harrison’s food brings together Latin American favorites with modern presentations. The menu is wide-ranging, embracing cuisines from Spanish-speaking countries. There are Spanish tapas, for example, including bacalao, a buttery mash of potatoes and salt cod served in a mortar with toast and Spanish olive oil. The waitress advised us that it had a strong fish flavor, but we found the bacalao to be fairly mild and perfectly smooth, with a delicious touch of fresh thyme. Dining News: RIP Captiol Dawg

Capitol_dawg

Unfortunately, another local restaurant has bit the dust due to the still sputtering economy. This time, it's Capitol Dawg, who had to compete with $1.50 hot dogs and sodas at Costco. Its last day will be tomorrow, reports Allen Pierleoni in the Sac Bee

The popular midtown restaurant Capitol Dawg will close its doors after lunch on Tuesday.

"This hasn't come on suddenly," owner Mike Brown said Friday. "It's been a struggle to keep the doors open and (make) a reasonable profit. (Blame it on) rising food costs combined with years of a struggling economy – including state worker furloughs – and our location."

Capitol Dawg is near the intersection of Capitol Avenue and 20th Street in Sacramento, where a concentration of restaurants compete for diners' dollars.

Bombay Bar and Grill - My last impression of Bombay Bar and Grill was a favorable one though. Our waitress didn't seem to mind that we lingered a little longer than most diners post-dinner while we caught up on girltalk and as we exited, both our waitress and the front end hostess paused to call out friendly "thank you's" and "good night's." It was a nice way to close out our dinner. Overall though, I prefer the Indian meals I've had at Kathmandu Kitchen and Mati's (RIP). The meals there tend to be more flavorful, a bit bigger in portion size and less pricey. I did like the location and vibrant decor of Bombay Bar and Grill (love the deep fuchsia colored walls in the ladies room) but I don't think the food impressed me enough to make a return trip. Restaurant Deals: Pork Belly Grub Shack

I'll eat anything Billy Ngo cooks. That's really not hyperbole. I've eaten my way through his menu at Kru, I literally tried everything on the menu at the now-defunct Red Lotus, and I've made some progress on his newest restaurant Pork Belly Grub Shack -- a collaboration with chef Aimal Formoli (of East Sac's Formoli's Bistro). If you've never tried Natomas's best kept secret, here's your chance -- half off.
