Dining News: Why Restaurant Thir13en Closed

Restaurant_thir13en

The owners of Restaurant Thir13en announced to their staff over the weekend that the establishment would be closing at the end of the month. Here's the official announcement, via Facebook.

With heavy hearts we say goodbye. Restaurant Thir13en will be closing effective February 1. Its been a whirlwind 2 and a half years and we'd like to thank all of you who have supported us most especially our employees without whom, none of this would have been possible. We plan to rock it til the end with Baconfest and other specials through the end of the month so make sure to come visit, say goodbye and have one last Capital Burger!

But the question remains, why did the second restaurant of Chef Adam Pechal, who had been on ABC reality cooking show The Taste fail? Sac Bee's Chris Macias gets comment straight from the chef.

“To make a long story short, we never made money there,” said Pechal. “It’s been a challenge from the beginning. What I thought was not that bad of a location was worse than one would expect ... it’s so frustrating, and got me thinking about fine dining in this town and if there’s enough people to support it....

“Catering was the main reason we went over there in the first place, for the ballroom and for the kitchen to do our dessert production and get the charcuterie and pasta program going,” said Pechal. “We’ve got some hard choices to make here soon, like what exactly we’ll be able to do with the space. We would like to keep pushing the catering because we’ve had some success with it.”

Macias also reports that the chef may have a new restaurant in the works. Read the entire story in the Sac Bee.

I've eaten at Restaurant Thir13en several times, and the one thing I never saw there was a line of people waiting to be seated. My guess is that it's the location. Nobody wanted to go to a restaurant in a, um, dated hotel with no parking in a quieter part of town. Personally, I prefer Tuli Bistro for both their food, ambiance and price point. But I believe Pechal is a talented chef and I certainly hope he gives fine dining another try.

Ready to cheer? - Boulevard Park just might be celebrating a new neighborhood eatery on Super Bowl weekend. It’s Mark and Carol Hoyt’s Easy on I at 1725 I St. “We’ve put in a nice custom bar,” Carol Hoyt told me, “and we’re going to have a couple TVs in here. It’s not really going to be a sports bar, but if someone wants to watch a football game, if they want to watch ‘Downton Abbey’ on Sunday nights, we’re just gonna go with it in that respect.” Cathie Anderson in the Sac Bee.

Enotria owner: 'Everybody was treated fairly' after closure - The owner of Enotria Restaurant & Wine Bar says employees were treated fairly after learning Wednesday that the Sacramento restaurant would close immediately. "Everybody was treated fairly," said owner David Hardie, who declined to say whether Enotria's 21 employees were given extra pay. Sonya Sorich in Sac Biz Journal.

Dining News: RIP Sheephereder Bar & Grille, Hello Fire Rock Grill

Frg-logo-shadow

Sheepherder Bar & Grill inRancho Cordova closed on Dec. 31st (with an all day happy hour) and will reopoen in early Feb. as Fire Rock Grill.

The follwing message has been on their answering machine for the last couple weeks:

Thank you for calling the historic Sheepherder restaurant on Folsom Blvd. in Rancho Cordova. We are currently closed for remodeling and will reopen on Feb. 3 as Fire Rock Grill under new ownership and management.

Per the description on their Facebook Page, the Fire Rock Grill is:

Family owned and operated, Fire Rock Grill is located in the historic Sheepherder building in Rancho Cordova and is giving a new twist to American food...

We are pleased to announce that a new restaurant Fire Rock Grill, located in the historic Sheepherder building, is under construction and is opening for business in February. We invite you to follow our process through construction as we make our restaurant more inviting to everyone who walks in the door.

Formerly known as Sheepherder Bar and Grille, the Alimena family has taken over to expand the American style menu to New American featuring tastes from Latin America and Mediterranean including Italian.

I don't have much more than that at this point besides the fact that it bills itself as a "family restaurant," but I'll keep an eye out and keep you informed.

When it opens, Fire Rock Grill will be located at 11275 Folsom Blvd., Rancho Cordova, CA.

Sacramento Beer Week's main event, the Beerfest, moves to Capitol Mall from Cal Expo - The powers that be who put on this region’s annual Sacramento Beer Week made a smart move: The annual Capitol Beerfest, normally held on a Saturday “all the way out” at Cal Expo, will now take place on Sunday, March 9, outdoors on Capitol Mall. Nick Miller in Sac News & Review.

Standing Tall: Selland’s Market-Cafe sets the standard for casual dining - While most Sacramento residents might judge the Selland group on the fine-dining standouts of Ella and The Kitchen, it’s probably Selland’s Market-Cafe in East Sac that they’re most familiar with. What makes Selland’s work is its casual, order-at-the-counter system and seemingly endless list of special events, deals and offers. The menu, a combo of soups, sandwiches, pizza and hot dishes, hasn’t changed much in the 13 years since the restaurant’s opening. But seasonal specials and weekly offers attract curious diners without nudging out the favorite dishes that keep East Sac residents coming in week after week. Greg Sabin in Inside Publications.

Dining News: Popcycle Stolen, Recovered

Popcycle Creamery, the bicycle mobile ice cream delivery service where all the ice cream is hand crafted and served in a push Pop form factor, was stolen early Saturday morning, owner Rachel Sprinkle-Strong announced on Popcycle's Facebook page.

The bike locked up in a locked garage, so it was seemingly well protected. According to the CBS 13 interview (above), the bike was missing its tires, bike seat and pedals, but the rest of the bike was in tact.

Dine Downtown Week - I have already enjoyed two Dine Downtown menus: Esquire Grill and Downtown & Vine. Downtown & Vine offers a nice range of choices on their menu, complete with a dessert and drink pairing to round out the meal, a great deal for the price. We were very pleased with our meal and will be returning again. Amber Stott on Awake at the Whisk.

Dine Downton at Esquire Grill (1213 K Street) -  I have been to Esquire many times in the past so I had some pretty high expectations going in for the Dine Downtown dinner. The choices on the menu were very impressive, which made it really hard to decide what selections to go for...I would add Esquire Grill to your list of places to visit over the next week for Dine Downtown! Dining News: Paesanos Midtown Closed for Rennovation, to Reopen on Tuesday

20131117_122250

Paesanos Midtown closed temporarily on Monday, Nov. 11 for a modest face lift and is scheduled to reopen tomorrow, owner Mark Scribner said in an interview on Sunday.

The impetus for the closure was the need to install new flooring in the kitchen. While they were closed, they decided to get some other work done, including:

  • New coat of paint
  • New art
  • Additional bench seating to allow for a more flexible dining area
  • New chandeliers
  • Doubling their taps from 6 to 12 with the addition of a glycol cooling system

Scribner (whose parents own local winery Scibner Bend) said they decided to do the work now since there's a slight lull between the end of the summer and the holiday season. The last renovation of the space was done 12 years ago in 2001.

The menu will also get a small update with the addition of a few more pastas, pizzas and salads.

Fans of the restaurant don't need to worry - the character of restaurant they love should remain the same after it reopens tomorrow. It'll just be a little freshened up.
