Dining News: Where You Can Get Foie Gras in Sacramento Right Now

 IMG_2952

Shaved, frozen foie gras on a sacallop nigiri at Kru in June 2012.

In case you missed the great news, foie gras is legal again after a judge overturned California's prohibition against selling the fattened duck liver.

(BTW: This isn't the place to discuss the ethics of foie gras. If you're against it, I understand why you feel that way, I respect your opinion, but my taste buds and the rest of me disagree.)

So I called around on late Wednesday night looking for restaurants that are already have it. If you have the $20 or so burning a hole in your pocket and you need a fix, hit up these restaurants:

Taylor's Kitchen

Mulvaney's B & L

Taylor's Market

Others:

Waterboy - Not in stock yet, but hopefully by the weekend.

Kru - Not yet, but Chef loves it and will try to get it on the menu soon.

Mighty Tavern - "We will. But there is no rush. It will be apart of our charcuterie program, it will have to fit into our menu. It won't just be on the menu," said chef Jason Azevedo via Twitter DM. "Soon, I personally love it. But I want to use the best way. Maybe as a mousse filling for herb profiteroles with aged balsamico. By Valentines at the earliest."

More News:

Local chefs react to lifting of foie gras ban - U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Wilson ruled Wednesday morning that California ordinances that outlawed the force feeding of birds were superseded by provisions of the federal Poultry Products Inspections Act. In short, state ordinances were overreaching and foie gras is for now good to go in California. “It’s a great day in liver land,” said a jubilant sounding Patrick Mulvaney, chef and proprietor of Mulvaney’s B&L. “I almost want to make it like a big birthday cake with a candle in it.” Chris Macias in the Sac Bee.

Boulevard Bistro, Carpe Vino named to best restaurants list - Two Sacramento-area restaurants are on this year's OpenTable list of the 100 best restaurants in America. The local eateries include Boulevard Bistro in Elk Grove and Carpe Vino in Auburn. The rankings are based on restaurant reviews that OpenTable diners submitted for more than 20,000 restaurants nationwide. Sonya Sorich in Sac Biz Journal.

Jack's Urban Eats coming to Elk Grove - Jack's Urban Eats is opening an Elk Grove restaurant, the city of Elk Grove announced on Facebook on Friday. The restaurant will cover 3,339 square feet at the Laguna Crossroads shopping center at 7701 Laguna Blvd. Sonya Sorich in Sac Biz Journal.

SusieCakes opening first local store in January - A Southern California company is opening its first Sacramento region bakery Jan. 24. SusieCakes, which this summer announced a plan to enter the area, will make its debut at the Pavilions shopping center. The bakery at 564 Pavilions Lane will sell cupcakes, frosted layer cakes, cookies and seasonal fruit pies. Sonya Sorich in Sac Biz Journal.

Counter Culture: Past continues at Folsom’s retro Hop Sing Palace - We ordered classic-retro, starting with pot stickers. The six dumplings were dense, but the filling was quite tasty. A nice touch was our waiter’s demonstration of how to make an excellent pot-sticker sauce from the condiments caddy: Two parts hoisin sauce, one part plum sauce, one part hot chili sauce, a splash of white vinegar, mixed until blended and smooth. It was so good we put it on every dish that followed. Allen Pierleoni in the Sac Bee.

Dining News: Now Open - Wahoo's Fish Tacos

20140713_195453701_iOS

Wahoo's Fish Tacos, a Southern California-based restaurant featuring Mexican food mixed with Brazilian and Asian flavors, opens on Monday, reports Sactown Magazine.

More than five years after opening, the L Street Lofts building has hooked its first restaurant—a 3,000 square-foot Wahoo’s Fish Taco, a Santa Ana-based chain that started in 1988 and features an “eclectic Mexican/Brazilian/Asian menu and a Hawaiian north-shore vibe,” according to its website. The restaurant will open this Monday, Aug. 4 at 11 a.m...

This will be Wahoo's first location in the Sacramento region. It has about three dozen restaurants in Southern California, three in Northern California (Sunnyvale, San Jose and Fresno) and has expanded to Colorado, Las Vegas, Austin, Texas, and recently opened its first franchises in New York City and Tokyo. The restaurant serves up tacos, burritos and enchiladas that come with either charbroiled fish, shrimp, steak, chicken, carnitas or tofu. They also serve salads and nachos and have both vegetarian and vegan options. Wahoo’s will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week, and may add a weekend brunch service down the road. The space will have outdoor seating on L Street, and will also feature a full bar, including margaritas.

Restaurant employees had told me earlier that the restaurant was aiming for a July 21 opening date, pending permits, training, etc. It appears, that with many new establishments, it took a little longer than they hoped.

There was also twitter chatter that the restaurant would actually open this past weekend. I stopped by early Sunday evening, and a sign on the door said that only the bar was open. But when I tried the door, it was locked. Peeking through their windows, the restaurant looked ready to open.

Wahoo's Fish Tacos is located at 1820 L Street, and can be found online at Wahoos.com.

I paid a short visit for a beer & hummus during happy hour and really liked the vibe. A handful of people - restaurant industry vets, owner Anthony Sadeghi informed me - enjoyed the patio at about 6:30 p.m. It was like discovering a secret fun place before everybody else got in on it. I intend to return for another visit once they're out of their soft opening phase.

Sadeghi says that he's still waiting for a couple things before opening for lunch - such as his point of sale terminal, which he hopes to get sometime this week.

Claim Jumper in downtown Sacramento - That touch-all-the-bases and offend-nobody menu did little to wow us. Dining News: RIP Gatsby's Diner

Gatsby's Diner, which was once featured on Food Network's Diner's, Dives and Drive Ins, closed over the weekend.

Owner David Perez confirmed that Sunday was the restaurant's final day in a short interview on Saturday afternoon.

"We're looking to make a change," said Perez, explaining that he and his business partner are architect and engineers. "We're taking a breath."

Perez also said that in the future, they may look to do something smaller scale, possibly a food truck.

In 2010, the Sac News & Review's Garrett McCord gave the restaurant a three star review. "Gatsby’s accomplishes what any diner sets out to do: The servers are entertaining and professional, and the burgers more than meet expectations," wrote McCord.

Former chef and part owner Jerad Nutall told Cowtown Eats in Aug. 2013 that he had left the restaurant at the end of 2012.

I've eaten there only once (on a half off deal), and I thought it was a nice neighborhood diner. I'm sure those who live in that part of town will miss it.

Gatsby's Diner was located at 2598 Alta Arden Expressway.

Dining News: Streets of London's Food Truck Launches This Week

Streets_of_london

The Sac Bee got the scoop last week that Streets of London was launching a food truck. Streets didn't waste any time, and are launching this week, reports Kurt Chirbas in the Sac Bee.

Streets of London plans on putting its new food truck on the road next week for a "gentle launch," according to Marty Hutton, executive chef at the English-style pub...

Hutton had initially wanted an actual double-decker bus. After determining that compliance requirements would make it too expensive, he spent nine months searching for a food truck.

He stumbled across the current truck while scanning Craig's List on the way back from the Bay Area. Hutton placed a call to its owner and headed to San Jose.
