Let's face it. All of us who have watched eating contests think that it can't be that hard to get good eat eating. I mean' we all do it 3 times a day, every day of our lives. But when you actually sit down and think about it, if it were easy, wouldn't everybody be doing it?
Well, if you still think you've got what it takes to get famous by eating all you can, Jonathan Mendick rounds up five food challenges in the Sacramento region. Here's one from Republic that's yet to be conquered.
Keep on truckin’ - Wolf down the gigantic 18 Wheeler burger ($40) in an hour and you’ll eat it for free, receive a T-shirt and get a photo on the wall. Sound easy? Check this: You’ll need to make it through 5 pounds of burger patty, 10 slices of bacon, 8 slices of cheddar cheese, half a head of lettuce, a whole tomato and a burger bun the size of a hubcap. Approximately 25 people have failed to complete the challenge, according to Andrew Blaskovich, the dish’s creator and owner of Drewski’s Hot Rod Kitchen. Unfortunately, the author leaves off one very important gut bomb off the list -- the Newbold Challenge at The Eatery in West Sac. Per the Sac Bee:
During happy hour, The Eatery is offering its amazing "Disco Fries Ryan" (named after a culinary school classmate) for $5 (regularly $10). If you know what's on that massive plate -- two eggs, bacon, melted cheese, gravy and lots of fries -- you will realize what a bargain that is. And this is the good stuff -- top-notch ingredients presented in fun, delicious, decadent balance.
But that's not all. If you also order the double burger (with bacon and cheese) like the one I mentioned in the review, and you manage to finish the burger and the fries within an hour, the food is on the house and you get your photo on the wall of fame.
The challenge is appropriately named for Timothy Newbold, the first man to complete the challenge. Since then, at least a half dozen brave men have defeated the challenge.

Café Roma, Sacramento - When the SacFoodies received an invitation to come try a meal at Café Roma, the three of us jumped at the chance to take a lunch “field trip” to Italy. We arrived at the bustling café and were promptly greeted by owner Abe Saadeh who told us a bit about his restaurant, including their recent expansion and new wine bar addition. After studying the menu, we decided to share a handful of items and placed our order at the counter: a cup of the Italian Wedding Soup, the house-made hummus, the mushroom pizza, the house lasagna and a Tuscan chicken Panini.
