Dining News: Wicked 'Wich Now Serving at Raley Field

Wickedwich
When Wicked 'Wich started serving food at Broderick in West Sac and announced plans for an outlet at Downtown Plaza, they promised that their goal was world domination. Today, they've taken the next step by selling food at Raley Field during Rivercats River Cats Games, starting on April 20.

Right now, they promise to serve their signature sandwiches, which include Pittsburgh-style sandwiches, "and more." No word on what else they have up their sleeve, but I'm glad there are even more food options at the park.

Try It: Juno’s Bahn Mi Sandwich - I was energized and delighted by a vivacious bahn mi sandwich I tried recently at Juno’s Kitchen & Delicatessen in East Sacramento...The establishment’s bahn mi – composed on a crusty-chewy, delicious roll, was crammed full of grilled pork loin, jalapeno peppers, red onion, pickled radish, grated carrot and lots of cilantro – a vibrant tumble of ingredients that seriously perked up my palate. Kira O'Donnell in Sac Mag.

The Prince of Pork: Bacon Fest founder is crazy for the cured meat product - “If someone wanted to pay me to travel around as a bacon ambassador, I’d do it,” Brian Guido says with a chuckle. “Obviously, I love bacon.” Guido’s pork appreciation isn’t necessarily obvious at first sight, but if you’ve ever attended Bacon Fest Sacramento, the foodie frenzy that celebrated its second decadent year this January, you have Guido to thank for it. Dining News: Coyote Tap House Wrongs Customers, Makes it Right

Coyotetaphouse
On Friday, I wrote a post about bars with Superbowl Sunday deals. One of the bars I listed was Coyote Tap House, with the flyer from their Facebook Page.

$5 pitchers, $2 shots and an all you can eat buffet, the advertisement claimed.

But when I got home from watching the Super Bowl at a buddy's house, I checked my e-mail and saw widespread dissatisfication with Coyote Tap House. (You can also see that dissatisfaction on the comments left on their Facebook page. Click on the image above for a larger version.)

"Coyote Tap House Super Bowl poster is a scam. Just got here, it's actually $10 pitchers plus $5 jäger bombs and $3 fireball shots. Only thing accurate is the $15 buffet price," read an e-mail I got from a reader named Joe. I asked Joe if the restaurant gave any sort of explanation. Joe replied, "Said it was a promoter mistake. They were aware of It, but didn't seem to care."

On Monday morning, I contacted Coyote Tap House to get their side of the story.

"We did offered the $5 pitcher from 11am-1:30pm on Sunday. After 1:30pm we offer $10 pitcher with 8 different brands to choose from. We apologize for any confusion that maybe cause your readers. We will continues to make changes to better serve our customers," wrote Christine.

That really didn't satisfy me, though. Their advertisement said "Superbowl Party." Not Tailgate or pre-game specials. A reasonable person reading their sign would have expected that they could arrive at any time during the game and receive those deals.

They replied that the flyer should have been more clear. "We do want to acknowledge that should of [SIC] clarify the time on the flyer."

Then, Coyote Tap House did the right thing in trying to fix things. They offered any person who contacted Cowtown Eats a pitcher of beer for just $1 the next time they came in.

Restaurants make mistakes. Especially new ones. There's no excuse for what appeared to be a bait and switch, but give Coyote Tap House credit for acknowledging their error and trying to make it right.

Because they're making an effort, it's likely I'll give their restaurant another try soon.

Valentine's dinners are filling up fast; where are you going? - I'm putting together a story on dining out for Valentine's Day. In doing so, I just found out that Biba, the great Italian restaurant on Capitol Avenue, is already fully booked for its special prix fixe dinner that night. That's good news for the restaurant. But it's a reminder for those of you planning to wine and dine with a loved one on Feb 14. It's time to make reservations. Blair Anthony Robertson in the Sac Bee.

Wicked 'Wich's grand plans begin with the Downtown Plaza - Wicked 'Wich isn't quite a household name, but if its owners have their way, eventually not only will those in the Sacramento region know the sandwich makers' brand, they won't have to travel far to enjoy the East Coast-style cuisine. "We'd like to see Wicked 'Wich in airport terminals," said co-owner Chris Jarosz. "We feel we have a good brand and better options than some others. We'll keep pounding away and hope that fuel will take us to the next level." Karen Wilkinson in Sac Press.

Dining News: Wicked 'Wich to Open in Downtown Plaza

Fresh off launching Broderick restaurant & bar in West Sac, Wicked 'Wich, the popular food truck specializing in Pittsbugh-style sandwiches, is adding a location at the food court in Downtown Plaza, reports Mark Glover in the Sac Bee.

San Francisco-based JMA Ventures said today that Wicked 'Wich, the local food truck known for robust sandwiches, will open an eatery in the plaza's food court. The restaurant, aiming for an early spring opening, bears the Wicked 'Wich name.

"The mall is one of those places that we feel strongly that a product like the 'Wich could do well," said co-owner Marvin Maldonado. "We can offer something local, a unique product, something fast and even something healthy -- like our barbecue tofu or our vegan selections.

"Like the food truck, the mall restaurant will continue to serve only locally sourced meats, vegetables and breads from the Sacramento region."

Bartender, what's this bacon doing in my beer? - If you've been out and about the last couple of days, you'll know that Sacramento's weeklong BaconFest is in full throttle at numerous pubs and restaurants. We dropped by Pangaea Two Brews on Franklin Boulevard last night after dinner to take part in the experience. I had their now-famous - or instantly notorious - "Suicide IPA," which is a blend of 4 or 5 of the IPAs on tap, garnished with a strip of bacon. An IPA, of course, can have - and should have - plenty of that hoppy bitterness greeting the front of the palate. Sometimes that's balanced with a sweet or fruity finish, sometimes not. The "Suicide" tends to tone things down rather than ramp them up. Blair Anthony Robertson in the Sac Bee.

Magpie's chicken for two is one of Sactown's great dishes - One of my my food-related resolutions for 2013 is to eat at Magpie more often. So, when I heard the great restaurant on R Street was resurrecting its chicken dinner for two, we got there in a hurry. This was one of the first dishes Lynn and I ordered at Magpie, back in those early days when it was pretty much an empty, fledgling restaurant and co-owner Janel Inouye was our server. The chicken back then was a revelation, and it seemed to encapsulate the quality and values that would come to define Magpie...But would the new chicken dish be as good as the one we remembered? Our answer came shortly after the dish arrived at our table. Our expectations were extremely high -- and we were still blown away. And really? Who orders chicken at a top-flight restaurant anyway? But the chicken here was -- and is -- transcendent. The latest chicken for two, at $29, is one of the most impressive and thoroughly enjoyable chicken dishes I've ever had. What's more, I've never tasted spinach done as well as this -- sauteed with great finesse in the drippings of the chicken and deglazed with a cider vinaigrette, the flavors and perfect texture (not too cooked, not chewy or watery) blew me away. Blair Anthony Robertson in the Sac Bee.

Daily Dining News: Wicked 'Wich Owners to Open West Sac Bar

Continuing the trend of successful food truck owners graduating to brick and mortar locations, Wicked 'Wich will be opening a new restaurant and bar, Broderick, in West Sac in October.

Broderick, set to open at 319 Sixth St. in October, will be a working-class bar with stiff drinks, big portions and a no-frills, no-nonsense approach, according to manager and co-owner Chris Jarosz, who is also the operator of the Wicked ‘wich food truck.

"It will be real American bar food," Jarosz said. "No Nouveau California cuisine, no fusion this or that. It's just going to be pure, unadulterated, old-school Middle-American bar food: heavy-duty comfort food, but as good as it gets."

The menu is still in development, but Jarosz said he has items in mind like East Coast-style chicken wings (big, fat and meaty), monster burgers, Philly cheesesteaks – the kind of hearty bar food that goes down well with beer, which will also be available in abundance.

While I found plenty of options in that price range, I also found—surprise, surprise—that many of the least expensive veggie burgers in town also are the least enticing, using frozen patties (yup, the same Gardenburgers you find at the grocery store) and little innovation. Daily Dining News: Whose Food Truck Cuisine Reigns Supreme?

IMG-20110421-00081

Over the weekend, food trucks Heavenly Dog, Drewski's Hot Rod Kitchen, Coast to Coast Sandwiches, Fusion Eatz, Willie's Burgers and Wicked 'Wich all competed in the Capitol  Concours d'Elegance, a high end car show on Capitol mall. They all did it for charity, with the Shriner's Hospital and California Automobile Museum benefiting from the event.

The judges included the Sac Bee's Allen Pierleoni Chris Macias, Bernice Hagen, formerly with Sac Mag's Dining Divas, Catherine Enfield of Munchie Musings and Rodney Blackwell of Burger Junkies. (I was contacted to be a judge, but couldn't do it due to scheduling reasons.)

The Sac Bee has the details:

After a couple of hours of tasting, scoring and discussion (yes, all the french fries and tater tots were great), the judges ranked the top three, which were separated by only a few points.

  • No. 1 was Drewski's for its heavy-duty Mustang sandwich - braised Korean-style shortrib, homemade kimchi, shredded daikon radish, Sriracha-wasabi aioli, and Swiss and havarti cheeses on grilled nine-grain wheat bread.
  • No. 2 was Heavenly Dog for its Three Alarm Dog - bacon-wrapped hot link, house-made habanero pepper aioli, grilled onion and melted peppered jack cheese ona grilled bun.
  • No. 3 was Coast to Coast for its Catfish Po' Boy - crunchy cornmeal-crusted catfish, spicy aioli, lettuce, tomato, pickle chips and, as one judge put it, "outrageously good sweet potato fries" with house-made hot ketchup and hot sauce.

I've been to most of the food trucks and I've enjoyed every single meal. Last weekend, I had a great dinner from Fuzion Eatz while they were parked outside Track 7 Brewery. Since they started, Fuzion Eatz has really improved their offerings. I'm looking forward to trying them again.

Daily Dining News: Red Rabbit on J St. Opens

Redrabbit
Red Rabbit, named after the ginormous sculpture at the new airport terminal, is now (soft) open and will have its grand opening on Friday, Feb. 10, reports Brandon Darnell in Sac Press.

The restaurant and bar aims to bring affordable food and drinks with an international flair to the block and see the same successes that other businesses – Harlow’s, BarWest Burgers & Wings and Centro Cocina Mexicana – have seen, said co-owners Matt Nurge and John Bays.

“We’re going with the globally inspired concept,” said Bays, who is the restaurant’s chef. “We’ve got a little Vietnamese, a little American – a lot of braising going on, and we’ve got some Hawaiian.”

Red Rabbit fills the space formerly occupied by Red Lotus.
